This assignment consists of five questions. Each of your responses should be one or more paragraphs long, depending upon the depth of the question. An answer consisting of only a few short sentences is insufficient and will receive a poor grade. Be sure to cite any and all sources correctly so that your academic integrity is not called into question.
Copy the following questions, add your answers, and submit them below in one attached document.
1.What are the functional characteristics required for something to be classified as alive? How do these functions facilitate meeting the survival needs of an organism?
2. Describe how weak bonds can hold large macromolecules together. Give specific examples of these bonds helping a macromolecule form a secondary or tertiary structure.
3. Using your knowledge of cellular organelles, what types of cells would have more or less of any specific organelle. Relate back to the relationship between structure, and function. Give at least two examples of different cell types and why they may have a different distribution of specific organelles.
4. Compare and contrast the processes of transcription and translation in a eukaryote. Where do these processes take place? What organelles are involved? What templates are used for each process? What is the end product of each process?
5. Doxorubicin and Vincristine are chemotherapeutic drugs. Doxorubicin (Adriamycin) binds to DNA and blocks mRNA synthesis, while vincristine damages the mitotic spindle. Using your understanding of cellular processes, explain how each of these drugs could be fatal to a cell.
